Direct Flights from Trichy to Penang

Tourism Malaysia and Malindo Air have announced the launch of the first direct flight from Trichy to Penang. Trichy Airport has become the first international airport to have direct flight services to Penang, Malaysia which is in addition to the 10 flight operations of Malindo Air to Kuala Lumpur from Trichy.

Malindo Air will operate two services a week on Tuesdays and Saturdays. The flight will depart from Penang airport at 8.30 pm and arrive at Trichy airport at 9.40 pm. In the return direction, it will depart from Trichy at 10.30 pm and reach Penang at 4.45 am, the following day. Malindo Air’s network carrier allows passengers from Trichy to Penang in connecting other domestic destinations in Malaysia as well.

Speaking at the launch Noor Azman Samsudin, director, Tourism Malaysia, Chennai said, “The decision by Malindo Air to start this new route emphasises the value and importance of tourism, trade and business links between India and Malaysia. In fact, India is the sixth largest contributor to the tourism sector in Malaysia. We hope that this new air link will contribute to boost tourism in support of MYFEST 2015, encouraging Indian tourists to come more often and stay longer in order to enjoy the festival offerings nationwide.”

Chandran Rama Muthy, chief executive officer, Malindo Air said, “We are excited to announce the news of our expansion in the cities of India. We foresee an encouraging passenger growth from South India, particularly Trichy, a huge market for Malaysia as a large portion of Malaysia’s Indian population is from this region of India.”

The Boeing 737-900ER series aircraft will operate in this sector, with a seating capacity of 180 which includes 168 economy and 12 business class seats.

NIT Trichy planning to start a new research park

National Institute of Technology (NIT), Trichy, is planning to start a new research park model to draw collaboration between the academia and the industry.

We are planning to have a research hut model similar to the one in Birmingham in England, said S Sundarrajan, director, NIT Trichy.

Explaining this, Sundarrajan said, the model would help develop facilities keeping in mind demand, instead of setting up a vertical building and waiting for the occupants. The institute is currently looking at incubating 10 new companies this year at its campus-located Centre for Entrepreneurship Development and Incubation (CEDI) facility.

NIT has around 400 acre space at its campus to develop these research huts. The proposal for development is currently being considered by the department of Science and Technology, and the institute expects the first research hut to start activities by March next year.

Around Rs 100 crore is being invested in the project, mainly for the purchase of equipment. NIT has inked a partnership with Sonata Software to support the institute’s incubation centre, and the entrepreneurship development activities.

The entrepreneurship centre, started three years ago, with a fund of Rs 1.75 crore from the central government, would receive Rs 1.2 crore funding from Sonata for the next three years beginning to aid technology business incubation.

More than just funding, our management will mentor enterpreneurs in meeting challenges like taking their product to the market and getting them fund-ready, said Srikar Reddy, CEO of Sonata Software.

He said the company was also open to acquiring potential tech startups. The centre has created four start ups, all in the technology space, including social media, video acceleration, eyecare system and fuel efficiency in automobile sector.

There is still room for another 10 enterprises to incubate at the centre. We expect these firms would be able to move out from the centre after 18-24 months of operations, said G Kannabiran, professor, department of Management Studies, NIT, Trichy.

With the establishment of research huts, the institute expects to stimulate research and entrepreneurship to higher level, said Sundarrajan.

 Bharathidasan University has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for setting up of two major solar power plants with the Bharat Heavy Electronics-EDN, Bangalore, one on the main premises and the other on Khajamalai Campus on Friday.

The main campus will get a 500-kWp Ground Mounted Grid Interactive Solar PV Power Plant with all possible provisions for increasing the power generation up to 1000 kWp.

They had allotted huge infra of about 10 acres of land for this purpose. Similarly, two numbers of 50 kWp (each) Rooftop Grid Interactive Solar PV Power Plant would be installed on Khajamalai campus, one on the roof terrace of BUTP building and the other over the building of the IECD.
